New Mats Improve 4-H Show Rings
The Tire Recycling Management Association of Alberta
(TRMA), along with the 4-H Clubs of Alberta is supporting 4-H
competitors with a new pilot project. The TRMA is supplying 65
anti-fatigue rubber mats for the temporary surfacing of show rings
at 4-H livestock events. There's also a stock trailer to transport
the mats that are covered in big, bright graphics to attract attention
at the shows. The pilot project will test the new mat product
across Alberta's northeast 4-H region spanning from the Northern
Alberta /Northwest Territories border to Wainwright in East Central
Alberta.
These practical
and effective new mats are molded from the rubber crumb - a product
from processed scrap tires. They are more comfortable and less
tiring for livestock than traditional surfacing according to ranchers
and other livestock owners. The mats are also easy to install
and remove, and are cleaner and more durable than other material
normally used for show rings in covered areas.
"It took
some pretty clever Albertans to come up with the idea of using
rubber crumb this way," say 4-H Clubs of Alberta spokesperson,
Carol Sullivan. "This ingenuity is a good example to kids,
and the project also gives 4-H members the opportunity to understand
and experience the benefits of recycling first-hand."
"The TRMA
is pleased to be chosen by Alberta's 4-H Clubs as a partner,"
says Ken Albrecht, Chairman of the TRMA. Recycling is an investment
in the future - and so is 4-H. Like 4-H, the TRMA believes in
projects that can teach and inspire young people.
