Are
You Up Standard?
- What is
a standard?
"A
means of determining what a thing should be"
Webster's Dictionary
The above definition is given to indicate that conforming
to a standard is the same, or holds the same weight, whether the
standard is established by law or custom.
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) produces
the largest voluntary standards development systems in the world.
ASTM is a not-for-profit organization that publishes 8,500 standards
per year. It is a forum for producers, users and consumers.
According to ASTM, a standard is a document that has been developed
and established within the consensus of the Society and meets approval
requirements of ASTM procedures and regulations. Note: ASTM standards
are developed voluntarily and only become legally binding when a
government body makes them so or they are put in a contract. Generally,
standards are incorporated into specs or plans.
